Creative Challenge #3 - Dance Mapping - Part 2

We’ve come up with fun ways to share Corali’s ways of working with you at home. We’d love you to have a go and find out what you create!

If you would like to share any of your creations to feature on our social media channels email them to admin@corali.org.uk

CHALLENGE #3 - DANCE MAPPING - PART 2

Our Associate Artistic Director Jacobus Flynn has made a challenge for you which looks at the different spaces that make up our homes and builds up a dance map. In Challenge #3 Part 2 there are some new ideas to help you make more collages and you will get a chance to develop your dance.

To do part 1 of this challenge head here

LISTEN TO THE TASKS IN THIS AUDIO CLIP:

OR FOLLOW THE WRITTEN TASKS HERE:

Task 1: Looking at Object, Pattern and Texture

Go to one of the other rooms which you highlighted on your map (in Part 1, Task 3). Make a cardboard label (like you did in Part 1, Task 4).

This time, have a look at the smaller objects that are used in that room. Look for any patterns or repeated shapes. Try touching the objects to see what they feel like.

Choose 2 or 3 objects that have an interesting pattern or texture or which have different qualities.

Here are 3 objects Jacobus found in his kitchen:

Task 2: Like you did in Part 1, Task 5 make a collage for this room.

  • You can draw the patterns that you have found

  • You could take a close up photograph and print it out

  • You could make or find a similar texture from cardboard and stick it on

For example, to make his “kitchen” object sign, Jacobus used:

  • a drawing of the pasta spoon

  • a bit of the cut up egg box

  • a close up photo of the lemon squeezer

Task 3: making movement from your objects

As you did in Part 1, Task 8 find some movements that express or describe each of the objects you have chosen.

You might be inspired by:

  • shape

  • colour

  • texture/pattern

  • what the object is used for/what it does

  • the noise that it makes

If you found any patterns, try repeating a move to create this pattern in the space around you.

Task 4: making an object dance

Have a play with your object moves to make a short dance that captures something about the objects.

As before, you can make the moves flow together in a short sequence or you can improvise with them in any order.

Now you have made a new dance and created a new picture collage for another one of your rooms.

Task 5: making a dance from a memory or sound

As well as the shapes, lines, objects and textures in our homes, we can create movements from other things to do with where we live. This task is more to do with imagination, creating things by thinking about them and how they make you feel.

For example, you might have a memory of a room from when you were younger that could inspire some movement. Maybe you remember hiding behind the sofa in a scary film. How could you show this in movement?

There might be a sound in that room that you really like or always think of. Like the sound of a clock, or sounds from outside the window.

If you find this hard, close your eyes and have a good listen and think. Remember, there is no right or wrong with this task, it is about you and your imagination.

For example, Jacobus remembered friends arriving at the front door with a cake for a birthday party. He made a memory picture for the room he labelled “entrance”, and found some movements for this memory.

Task 6

Now you can make a new dance (with a picture sign) for any of the other rooms on your map (the rooms you chose in Part 1, Task 4).

Take a moment to remember how you made your first 3 dances:

  • you looked at the shapes and lines in the room

  • you found smaller interesting objects and patterns

  • you used a memory or sound

You can use any of these tasks to make your new room dance, or try out a combination of all of them.

You should now have up to 4 pictures, and 4 different dances to go with them.

Task 7: developing your dances

Look at the cards you have created for each room and go over the movement material you made from each of them.

Now you can develop the movement material in each dance.

Here is a quick reminder of ways you can start to develop a dance:

  • Find a change of SPEED. Try some bits fast, try some bits slow.

  • Try changing the SIZE/SCALE. Try some moves big, and some small.

  • Add in a change of DIRECTION. Use the space in front, above, below, behind, or change level.

Notice how these choices can change your dance and help each room dance to have a different feeling or style

You can re-set the order (sequence), or you can improvise with your dance vocabulary.

Congratulations! Now you have some pictures or collages of rooms in your home, and some short dances which go with them.

In Challenge # 3 Part 3 (coming soon) you will get to develop all of these ideas further and make a travelling map dance!

If you like you could send us a picture of your maps and drawings or a film of you dancing your sequence to admin@corali.org.uk we would love to share it on our social media pages!
